The Alchemy of the Heart

While rereading a book documenting seventeenth-century witchcraft trials in Italy and the rituals practised by the women who stood accused, my thoughts wandered back to my childhood, when I would watch my grandmother and her friends deal with everyday troubles through innocent little rituals: phrases repeated like nursery rhymes a precise number of times, accompanied by particular gestures or the use of some small object imbued with a special purpose.

To me, it all seemed perfectly natural and ordinary, as though certain things simply could not be done in any other way.

I want to dedicate these pendants to their memory.
