Myth of Actaeon and Artemis

Actaeon, a young hunter, surprised Artemis while she was bathing and was transformed into a stag by her.

His loyal dogs, not recognizing him, devoured him; but immediately after, overcome by despair at his absence, they roamed the forest in search of their lost master.

To appease them, the centaur Chiron created an image of Actaeon, so that the dogs could find a shadow of their lord and put an end to their sorrow.
