Guinefort, or rather known as Saint Guinefort, was a greyhound who lived in France in the 1400s and was the most faithful dog of a rich lord.

One day, the lord returned home after a hunting trip and found his infant son's cradle overturned and the dog, entrusted with guarding him, with its jaws stained with blood.

Seized by implacable rage, at the thought that his dog had harmed the child, he ran him through with his sword, killing him.

But, approaching the cradle, he noticed that the infant was alive and asleep, and by his side lay the lifeless body of a snake.

Realizing he had just killed his most faithful friend, the lord, in despair, decided to bury Guinefort near his dwelling.

The place where the greyhound's remains lay became a place of pilgrimage for the faithful who considered this dog to be a saintly protector of children, even capable of performing miracles to save them when they were ill.

The Catholic church tried several times to stop the cult of Saint Guinefort, without success, until the beginning of the twentieth century, when it finally managed to abolish it.
